And Now We Wait. UPDATE FROM CREATIVE ASSEMBLY ON STEAM (Oct 15. 2026) "We’re aware that Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards. We’ve seen your feedback, comments, and reviews. We agree that the current experience is not where it needs to be. As a result we are working with platform holders to remove the game from sale and to reinstate the original game while we investigate the issues. Existing owners will still be able to access and play the game. We are working closely with our development partner to identify the causes of these problems, deliver improvements, and ensure Shogun 2 – Complete Edition meets the quality standards players expect from Total War." -SEGA & Creative Assembly Wow. They actually listened to feedback and did the right thing, I'm surprised. If they actually follow through with this and fix the proble…
Avoid. I own the original Shogun 2 on Steam and can only add to the critical voices: avoid. The "Complete" Edition is a worse experience overall, not helped by the lack of mod support. That mod support that fixed many bugs and issues that are still present in this new version of the game. It's simply put a buggy and unoptimized mess. It's the Oblivion Remaster all over again. Some fresh paint but no fixes, no upgrades, nothing. Just re-used assets from other TW games, cut content (3D videos are gone), and more bugs than ever. Bug they were told about before release. They also used GenAI to update the unit cards and didn't do that well either. Avoid like the plague. If you can buy the original Shogun 2 somewhere do that instead.
AI Generated Downgrade. This version is not significantly different enough from the original to justify another release. It's still poorly optimized and runs terribly without proper text scaling. It lacks many features from later Total War releases while also making the original assets worse by making them look too glossy with AI upscaling and generative AI. Faces are straight up erased from certain unit artwork because the AI upscaling is hallucinating. Its a wonder why they wouldn't just release Shogun 2 classic on GOG but instead they chose to delist the original on Steam as well. What an absolute disappointment,
Not needed coat of paint with issues. I grabbed the game to check it out myself and see if it's really as bad as people say. Based on what I've played so far, the performance feels pretty similar to Total War: Pharaoh overall. The campaign map is super bright and colorful, which looks a bit off, but it runs smooth without any hiccups. When it comes to battles, I notice the FPS dips a bit more noticeably—dropping to around 50, which is about what happens when I zoom in during Pharaoh battles. The battle I was in had pretty dark lighting, and I'm not sure if it's the time of day, weather, lighting effects, or just a graphics glitch. Either way, it didn't look great. The AA seems totally broken or something because the game looks rough unless you turn on DLSS AA. I didn't really notice the unit flag color-changing issue with the Shimazu that everyone's talking about. Yeah, I know they messe…
