Snowball and lack of personality. I think Star General is a strange experiment where the legendary Panzer General engine was forced into a 4X suit that simply doesn't fit. While the premise of galactic conquest is enticing, the final product is a clunky hybrid that lacks the tactical agility of a pure wargame and the strategic depth of a true empire-builder. It is a playable experience, and the mouse-driven interface is smooth enough, but the lack of keyboard shortcuts makes the management feel more tedious than it needs to be. The lifeblood of the game is Resource Points (RP), which you generate each turn to fund your units and buildings. However, the game fails fundamentally by lacking any internal "brakes" for the snowball effect. Nothing special. That said it's not a waste of time either. Just a very average, simplistic (but the AI is hard) Panzer General like game. If you're familiar with PG you'll soon pick this one up. Graphics are fugly, sounds are basic, music is just soooo gay. The UI is terrible, but you soon get used to it. Some of the five star reviews here are a serious exercise in hyperbole. Especially the so called current "most helpful" one. A wall of hyper-praise that can only be a paid for job! And it has 115 posreps vs ZERO negreps. In fact all the 4 and 5 star reviews, even some totally stupid one-liner jobs are massively posrepped. Now THAT'S suspicious if you ask me, for such a "meh" game!
Same SSi quality... but, simply, boring. Yup. I tried to enjoyed it, but the lack of a unified story (there are story un-related missions), tons of factions with, overall, same units (too much for its own good, considering some are redundant, to say the least) and other features I shan't bother to mention... but major offender of it's... SLOW. Damn, I played some other of their games, but this one is only one truly slow. Still, I mean, Yes. It's an SSi game and you are a fan of strategy games, this one could be for you... it wasn't for me, though. Be warned.
