Textbook example of a perfect sequel. The first La-Mulana quickly became my favorite game of all time as soon as I played it. Even being as hyped as I was to play this, it didn't let me down at all. I don't think it surpassed the first game, but a lot of that could just be a result of me already knowing what I was in for. The game does feel very similar to its predecessor and you'll be doing fundamentally the same things. Exploring ancient ruins, solving difficult puzzles, fighting loads of minibosses. The big difference here is that you have some actual air control, as you're now a spry young lass instead of a stiff old man. There's a bit more of a platforming focus in light of this, but nothing too major. It does make a lot of the combat much more manageable, though it is still pretty tough (I actually couldn't beat the final boss this time). The area design is generally quite a bit mo…
Can't see the forest for the trees.. There is a surprising variety of experiences you can have playing the La-Mulana games, and at the very least you don't have to worry about it being 2005 so that your only option is to play the freeware original in Japanese with exactly two half-finished machine-translated guides as your only reference materials. That being said, having experienced that, it was still a significantly richer experience than this new sequel is. Every La-Mulana game has its issues. The freeware release with its unwieldy save and healing system, grapple gloves, ROM carts, etc., the remake with its super-OP bosses and complete lack of retro aesthetic, and now the sequel with its hordes of exquisitely crafted B.S. unfunny and unfun "gotcha" moments. Nigoro did manage to successfully streamline LM2 somewhat, easing you into the game better, but seemingly in an attempt to maint…
Very unique puzzle-platform hybrid. TL;DR: La Mulana 2 is such a great combination of cryptic riddles, wondrous exploration, audiovisual flair, and on occasion even entertaining combat. It's a shame that it isn't quite as widely recognized as the modern classic it is. If you're familiar with the first La Mulana, this sequel is a bit more merciful with its initial ramp-up and guidance throughout the game. The puzzles are still tough, and can require combining clues from the whole game world, but the hints are better and the solutions are not as absurdly obtuse as the worst offenders in the first game. The game world doesn't have quite as much interconnectivity this time around, which helps focus on one roadblock at a time. The mantras are available earlier and provide one more "verb" to interact with the world, to good effect. La Mulana 2 is more eager to troll you with instant death trap…
A second Masterpiece. Very difficult, very niche, but if you like Metroidvanias and solving very, very hard puzzles with pretty much no hand holding, this might just be your new favourite game. I mean, just look at the art style. I have found the second game to be more beginner friendly.
