a high-score/leaderboard type game. I do enjoy a good rogue-like but I don't think this game has been fully thought-through by the developers, there's some odd and conflicting design choices. Get hit once and you loose your ammo, gear, and weapons - they all scatter individually on the ground, and you have to collect them all again to continue fighting. During the levels this works OK. However, during boss fights this feels utterly impossible, and for all practical purposes - a single hit in a boss fight means more or less Game Over. I think loosing and having to collect your gear is poor game design. It only makes you irritated and is kind of pointless since you'll most likely die anyway trying to collect them all (so why bother having it). There's also the very annoying thing of not being able to shoot diagonally, whilst the enemy creatures sure can do so. Maybe I haven't unlocked the…
2 Miniscule Design Choices Prevent 5/5. Simple yet difficult gunner w/ tons of replayibility that run-n-gun fans will love. Gameplay: Gonner is challenging yet impressively well-balanced, despite some opinions I've read. Ikk takes 1 hit w/o a mask, but the player gets one that will allow them to take 4 or even 6 very early in the game. The devs knew the game would be hard, so they sparingly put out masks and hearts. Ikk has powerups that regenerate very quickly. The ammo bar is daunting, but the last shot always drops a reload, in my experiences. Place it well, and it's alright. Ikk drops everything when hit, but he's invincible until the player hits jump to "respawn." Some rooms seem impossibly cluttered, but the rapid fire powerup makes quick work of rooms w/ some forethought, all while using 0 ammo. The player sees each level before it starts, and they can simply wait for enemies to m…
Excellent art, very punishing. The style, gameplay, and overall feel are great. When you get hit, it's very punishing, and you ony have a small window to recover. Often you/your stuff gets thrown randomly, and it's hard to recover. Most of my runs are "oh hey I'm doing great... oops I'm dead time to start over"
Maximum game per game. I like games where non-game elements don't get in the way. Sometimes cinematic and narrative and simulation elements can be present when selected carefully and a game still retains it's coherence, but sometimes that's where it all falls apart. I look to games like GoNNER as perfect examples of games that give you the most game per game, whose developers likely expect you to go watch a movie if you want strong narrative and cinematic elements. Every aspect of GoNNER's design aims to serve you interesting decisions that have interesting effects as it relates to direct and indirect consequences in each level, but also your success in the economy (your score). Relative success, if you have Steam, but leaderboards aren't present on GOG meaning you have to rely on motivation to beat your own score here. I don't think that is enough for most players though. If you're lock…
