Decent game

Decent game. Subjectively its a decent roguelike. Plays exactly as you'd expect from a rogue game, very nice colors, the combat is pretty nice, however it is very bloated, not what i'd except from a rogue game...there is some story for those interested also, but its full woke and kinda cringy dialog, it feels like a feminists wet dream, which is why I took a star from it. It has co op and 5 playable characters, each with their own personality, voice and moveset. Overall if rogue is your cup of tea I think you'll probably like it, but please add the lgbtq/DEI stuff in the description so that we'll know what we are buying cause spoilers alert : almost everyone is basically gay, straight men are all evil and traitorous, the women are boss babes and so on.

Impressive Looks, Exasperating Design

Impressive Looks, Exasperating Design. Astral Ascent is visually and audibly stunning, but despite its strengths, I struggled to enjoy it. As soon as I started, the game bombarded me with mechanics, and despite the abundance of descriptions it often failed to explain core connections between them, making choices unclear. I figured things out after playing for a few hours, but once I grasped the basics, it all felt disjointed - more like a collection of features than a cohesive system. Immersion was frequently broken during gameplay by some mechanic or awkward UI/UX decisions and storytelling issues. I might've still enjoyed the game despite that if it wasn't for the saving system. Progress isn’t auto-saved and you can only save and quit to menu when you spawn in a room. Quitting anywhere else - even two steps away from where the save icon appears - erases the entire run. And if the game…

Most excellent game!

Most excellent game!. After a rough couple of minutes, necessary to understand how to navigate the ingame menus (spell selection/discard is exceptionally bad design), i fell in love with the game. Beautifully crafted world/characters/music and very engaging gameplay. with tons of insentives to keep on grinding and reach higher difficulties. Looking forward to this studio's next game.

A rogue-lite Metroidvania done right.

A rogue-lite Metroidvania done right.. Dead Cells has been the best Metroidvania since the GBA Castlevanias. Well, though still number one, Dead Cells has a worthy contender in Astral Ascent. Astral Ascent accomplishes alotta what makes Metroidvanias fun while having its own identity: Unlockable playable characters with their own unlockable and diverse abilities. Diverse locales with randomly generated stage layouts. Enemies who ramp up in challenge as you level up. Multi-staged boss battles. The unlocking of abilities and their trade-offs can be a bit much, but doesn't hinder the fun. Hence the 4/5 stars. Played on Linux Mint 21.1, Ryzen 5 3500U (4c/8t 2.1GHz & integrated Vega 8 graphics), 8GB RAM, and an Xbox 360 wired controller. Plays dang nice!
