Bland with some redeeming features. I beat the game in less than a week. It was amusing for a bit, but it lacked an overall plot + motivation to keep it from dragging in the final third or quarter. The puzzles and mild platforming were generally uninspired, even though the game did save you a lot of irritation wtih some of its death mechanics (e.g., no fall damage, menu screen instant teleport out of dungeons). The boss fights were creative, and the variety of sub-worlds was impressive. But without any real motivation for what was in the world or why, it largely fell flat. The exploration aspect was generally fun, but it got tiresome. I was particularly sad about this because the post-game mechanic for finding secrets was really excellent. Music was ok for the atmosphere, but it needed to be a couple of notches better to sustain extended play + exploration without any plot support.
There's nothing else like it. Anodyne is unusual. I'd compare it to a playable dream more than anything else. Now the raw gameplay loop is pure classic Zelda, and it's not trying to hide it. Puzzles, combat, exploration and bosses, all very well done, (the bosses in particular have some good designs to them) But calling Anodyne a Zelda clone would be like calling Half-Life a Quake clone just because they use basically the same engine. Anodyne's strength is in the experience of it. The game is profoundly unsettling, sometimes only a little, sometimes straying fully into horror territory. The game jumps from modern worlds to fantasy settings to nightmare locations in a fashion that seems random but never feels incongruent. The atmosphere ties it all together. Sometimes the enemies and bosses feel right out of Zelda. Sometimes they are the last sort of thing you'd expect to be fighting. The…
wonderfully whimsical and unsettling. the movement feels nice and tight, especially for a zelda-like, and all the characters and environments are mysterious and weird in all the right ways. the dungeon puzzles, although there are a couple areas that have some glitchiness or imperfections, work perfectly for the game as a whole. it's got a dream-like feel like a place that i'd see in a dream but also be unsettled by and not have control over.
Excellent Game.. I went into this game expecting a quick 2D Zelda clone to play between other games. What I found was an incredible game that stands apart from Zelda comparisons with an atmosphere that is second to none. The music, pixel art, and story are captivating and convey the atmopshere perfectly. Truly a wonderful game, I enjoyed every minute.
